Sharks Win Third Straight, Beating Holy Names 3-1

OAKLAND, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University won its third straight match by downing Holy Names 3-1 on Monday night at Tobin Gym.

The Sharks (7-5, 3-1) needed four sets to beat the Hawks (2-10, 1-5) 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 25-13.

HPU hit .162 for the match with five blocks, but recorded 12 service aces. Holy Names hit just .101 with seven blocks and four aces.

The Sharks had strong numbers across the team. Junior Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, posted her third straight contest with 19 kills and added 20 digs for a double-double. Senior Perla Escobar of Calexico, Calif./Calexico also double-doubled with 17 kills and 19 digs.

Sophomore Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union led the Sharks with five blocks, while senior Amanda Acosta of Exeter, Calif./Exeter and sophomore Cara McClean of Beaverton, Ore./Southridge collected five services aces each.

The Hawks were led by Sierra Allen with 13 kills, while Maddy Standley and Fanny Chow each had eight. Mariah Leal posted five blocks for HNU.

The Sharks and Hawks swapped the lead six times in the opening set, with both teams seeing three-point leads go by the boards. HNU erased a 20-18 Sharks lead to grab a 21-20 lead but suffered a hitting error that gave the momentum back to HPU. The Sharks edged out to a 23-22 advantage before getting two straight kills to win 25-22.

HPU and Holy Names worked through three ties to get to 6-6 when the Hawks broke the set open with a 5-0 run. It would be the last tie of the match and there would be no more lead changes. HPU made a comeback after trailing 20-13, but the hole was too deep and the Hawks took the second set 25-20.

That's when the Sharks said it was enough, quickly taking a 6-0 lead in the third set. Then thanks to an Escobar kill, went on a 7-1 run that took the wind out of the Hawks sails. HPU built the lead to 24-10 before HNU rallied a bit, but a Collie kill ended the set 25-13.

The final set was much like the third with the Sharks getting out to a 6-1 lead. HPU followed with a 5-1 run, then exchanged points to open a 20-12 advantage. The Sharks put the match away down the final stretch with a 5-1 run to win on a Hawk attack error 25-13.

HPU has now claimed the first two contests of its five-match northern California road trip. HPU is in action again on Wednesday evening against Academy of Art in San Francisco, with first serve at 4 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PDT ) at Kezar Pavilion.
