SALT LAKE CITY -- Hawai'i Pacific University saw a two-goal lead evaporate in the last 12 minutes of regulation as HPU settled for a 2-2 double overtime draw with Fort Lewis (Colo.) at Westminster's Dumke Field.
The Sharks (0-1-1) picked up two quick goals coming out of scoreless first half before the Skyhawks (1-0-1) picked up goals two minutes apart inside of the last 12 minutes.
HPU got a pair of goals from senior
Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany to take the lead. Arzberger picked up his first goal in the 46th minute off an assist from junior
Ryo Hirayama of Fukuoka, Japan to take a 1-0 lead.
Arzberger collected his second goal of the season from an assist by senior
Jair Espinoza of San Miguel Petapa, Guatemala four minutes later in the 50th to give the Sharks a 2-0 advantage.
Fort Lewis rallied with Ryan Lee scoring twice late in regulation. Lee collected an unassisted goal in the 79th minute, and turned around in the 81st minute to score off a feed from Alejandro Arribas.
Neither team scored in the golden goal overtime periods despite strong offensive attacks.
HPU sophomore goalkeeper
Max Austli of Gothenburg, Sweden recorded six saves and allowed two goals in facing 17 shots. FLC keeper Peter Byrne tallied six saves and allowed two goals while facing 20 HPU shots.
The Sharks are idle until Saturday, Sept. 21, when the host Simon Fraser at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium in a 7 p.m. match.
