Hawai'i Pacific University Executive Director of Athletics and Community Relations
Sam Moku takes his turn in the Hawai'i AD Grindz Challenge.
The Hawai'i AD Grindz Challenge is a friendly cook-off featuring the athletic directors of the state's intercollegiate athletics programs: HPU's Moku, Hawai'i's David Matlin, Hawai'i Hilo's Patrick Guillen, and Chaminade's Bill Villa.
The series, a break from the worries caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on intercollegiate athletics, began earlier this week with UH Hilo's Guillen producing his "Mother's Fried Chicken" and challenged UH Manoa's Matlin. He followed with "Chicken As Good As It Gets" and passed the challenge to HPU's Moku.
"Mahalo Dave Matlin, I accept the challenge," said Moku. "I will make a recipe from the Big Island handed down to me by my uncle, Mauna Kea Loco Moko."
The challenge originated as a way for the ADs – not known for their cooking prowess – to have some fun, bring a smile to people's faces, and thank the community and fans of the Rainbow Warriors, Vulcans, Sharks, and Silverswords.
At the end of the video, Moku adds, "now I challenge my friend, Chaminade Silverswords Athletic Director Bill Villa."
The challenge will conclude with Villa, the dean of Hawai'i ADs. Once available, all four AD cooking videos will be posted on this page.
