HPU Clobbers Chaminade 2-0

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University scored a goal in each half in rolling to a 2-0 PacWest Conference victory over cross-town rival Chaminade on Sunday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (3-4-1, 1-0-1) remained unbeaten in PacWest action, while the Silverswords (2-4. 0-2) stayed winless in league play. The Sharks win also avenged a 2-0 non-conference loss at Chaminade to start the season on Sept. 4.

The Sharks totally dominated CUH, with HPU outshooting the Swords 19-9, and had 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

HPU lit the scoreboard in the 33rd minute when graduate student Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany/Therese von Bayern scored his first goal of the season when he got the ball at his feet following a blocked shot by senior Makana Srivongsana of  Honolulu/Kaiser in the top left corner of the box and buried it into the lower left side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when sophomore Sebastian Navarro of Menifee, Calif./Perris got a wide open shot from the left side for the 2-0 lead. Arzberger received a free kick before passing to Srivongsana who flicked the ball to Navarro for the score.

The HPU defense had a lights out first half, holding Chaminade to just one shot in the first half, then eight in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead tallied three saves for the Sharks and recorded his third shutout of the season.

CUH goalkeeper Brandon Yasue recorded nine saves and the Swords chalked up two team saves, against the Sharks shooting barrage.

The Sharks continue their PacWest homestand on Saturday when they host Concordia Irvine in a 7 p.m. contest at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
