WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University lost for the first time in three games as Biola scored three times in the last eight minutes to take a 4-2 PacWest Conference victory on Monday evening at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (3-5-2, 1-1-2) lost for the first time in PacWest Conference play. The Eagles (8-4, 4-1) moved into a second place tie in the conference with the win.
Biola opened the scoring just before halftime, when Onesimus Bonat recovered a bouncing ball from a scrum from in front of the goal and buried it in the net for the 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.
But the Sharks came back strong in the second half.
HPU sophomore
Dennis Dinyer of Hamburg, Germany scored his first goal of the season in the 51st minute when he got a feed from sophomore
Sebastian Navarro of Menifee, Calif./Perris at the top corner and drilled a shot to the high left corner to knot the game a 1-1.
About 10 minutes later, senior
Reece Montgomery of Dromore, Northern Ireland/Dromore scored off a corner kick. The Sharks corner to the front of the keeper box and was headed by a Biola player to the left side of penalty area. Montgomery rocketed the ball into the left side of the net to give HPU a 2-1 lead.
Despite losing two key players to injury during the second half, it appeared the Sharks would hold on.
But in the 82nd minute, Bonat took the ball down the right side, took two dribble steps up the end line before rifling a pass across the goal mouth. Oscar Rubalcava was on the left post to touch it in to tie the contest.
The Eagles took the lead in the 87th minute when Adam Jones found Jonathan Serrano open for the goal to give Biola the lead.
The Eagles clinched the contest after an HPU turnover in the final minute of play as Jones scored on a feed from Rubalcava for the final 4-2 mark with 33 seconds to go.
Senior goalkeeper
Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead notched four saves with the goals allowed against 14 shots by BU.
HPU also took 14 shots, with Eagles keeper J.D. Gunn also posting four saves and two goals allowed.
The Sharks final home game is on Friday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium against Point Loma. The senior night kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
