WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University saw Biola score twice in the last 12 minutes to take a 3-1 PacWest Conference win on Monday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (2-7-1, 1-2-1) lost for just the second time in three games, while the Eagles (5-6-1, 3-2) bounced back from a loss two days ago.
HPU grabbed the lead in the fifth minute, when sophomore
Caylie Uyema of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City recovered a loose ball in midfield and dribbled it to a spot five feet off the top of the box before drilling a left-footed shot that hit the lower edge of the crossbar and dropped into the goal for the 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles countered 17 minutes later in the 22nd minute. Abby Chavez took a dump pass from Halie Jamir and scooted it into the goal on the far right side to tie the game at 1-1.
The game stayed that way until the 79th minute. After a Chavez shot was deflected in front of the goal, Chloe Diaz gathered the ball and fired it in from the right side to take a 2-1 lead.
Biola added an insurance goal in the final seconds as the Eagles took control of a goal kick and got the ball to Jazmin Montalvo on a breakaway who won the one-on-one with a goal on the left side for the 3-1 advantage with 18 seconds to play. Jamir and Katelyn Penner were credited with the assists.
The late goals spoiled the play of sophomore goalkeeper
Madi DePhillips of Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep who tallied three saves with the three goals against the 12 Eagle shots.
Biola goalkeeper Briana Ruelas posted two saves with the one goal allowed on the 15 HPU shots.
The Sharks are slated to play again Friday when they face Point Loma for senior night at Waipio Stadium. The contest is scheduled to kickoff at 4:30 p.m.
