Sharks Cash Penalty Kick to beat Dominican 2-1 in 2OT

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University junior Kayli Ann Yoshioka converted a penalty kick in the 109th minute as HPU defeated Dominican (Calif.) 2-1 in PacWest Conference play on Tuesday at Kennelly Field.

The Sharks (3-8-1, 2-3-1) not only picked up their first road win of the season, but the first mainland road win since 2019 and the first PacWest mainland road victory since 2018. The Penguins (2-6-3, 1-4-0) dropped their fourth straight contest.

The match was scoreless until the 70th minute when sophomore Caylie Uyema of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City took the ball off a Penguin defender's foot and put it in the net to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

But the pesky Penguins got the equalizer in the 83rd minute as Alejandra Melendez dribbled to the top of the box and blasted a shot to the far post to make it 1-all and sent the game to overtime.

The Sharks outshot the Penguins in the overtime 6-1 but had nothing to show until a foul and yellow card in the penalty area against Dominican in the 109th minute.

Yoshioka, from Honolulu/Kaiser, stepped up and beat the keeper with the penalty shot for the HPU 2-1 win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Madi DePhillips of Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep did a stellar job between the pipes for HPU, recording four saves with the goal against while facing 12 Dominican shots for the win.

The Penguins Nicole Maler tallied two saves with the two goals allowed in facing 11 Sharks shots.

The Sharks play again on Thursday when they take on Holy Names at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, Calif. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. PDT).
