HAYWARD, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University won its second straight contest with a breakout offensive performance defeating Holy Names 3-1 in PacWest Conference play at Pioneer Stadium.
The Sharks (4-8-1, 3-3-1) collected a season-best three goals in the contest, just missing a shutout over the Hawks (0-14, 0-6).
The Sharks got on the scoreboard early, picking up a goal in the 15th minute when senior
Brittny Ihara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City scored her second goal of the season off a double assist from junior
Kaylee Sumida of Honolulu/Moanalua and junior
Kayli Ann Yoshioka of Honolulu/Kaiser for the 1-0 advantage.
HPU made it 2-0 before halftime when freshman
Jersey Botelho of Honolulu/University Lab slid the ball into the net unassisted in the 42nd minute.
The Sharks added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when freshman
Soraya Santos of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City scored her first goal unassisted to make it 3-0.
The Sharks looked like they would get the shutout, but a shot that crossed in the final second by the Hawks Kylie Tisdale made the final 3-1.
HPU sophomore goalkeeper
Madi DePhillips of Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep racked up five saves against 12 Holy Names shots for the victory.
Hawks keeper Abigail Burnell posted three saves with two goals in facing six first half HPU shots. Backup Nyah Summers also saw five shots and made three saves with a goal allowed.
HPU plays again on Sunday at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT) against Academy of Art at the CCSF Soccer Field.
