HAYWARD, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University used a stingy defense to chalk up its sixth shutout of the season in beating Holy Names 1-0 on Thursday at Pioneer Stadium.
The Sharks (6-5-2, 4-1-2) won their third straight and collected their fourth win in six games with the triumph over the Hawks (4-7-1, 2-4). The Sharks have only one loss in their last seven contests.
HPU scored the only goal it needed in the 79th minute when senior
Makana Srivongsana of Honolulu/Kaiser blasted the ball into the twine after a restart to give the Sharks the 1-0 lead.
The Sharks defense stepped up as well, forcing five missed Hawks shots in the last 10 minutes.
Senior goalkeeper
Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead notched his sixth shutout of the season in recording six saves against 13 shots in preserving the clean sheet for the Sharks. Two of the saves came in the final 10 minutes.
HPU had six recorded shots to score the one goal as Hawks keeper Rasmus Nielsen posted one save.
The Sharks continue their Northern California trip on Sunday, when they take on Academy of Art at the CCSF Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 11:30 a.m. HST (2:30 p.m. PDT).
