HONOLULU – Running without its top runners after four straight meets, the Hawai'i Pacific University men took first and the women placed third at the 2021 Chaminade Invitational Saturday morning at Kapiolani Park.
 
The Sharks defeated the Silverswords 21-34 in the men's race, while the Sharks women were third with 64 points behind the perfect 15 of the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine and the 61 points of Hawai'i Hilo. The host Chaminade women were fourth with 99 points.
 
Sophomore Kent Glover of Trussville, Ala./Hewitt-Trussville won the men's 8-kilometer race in a time of 28:25.6, a minute better than Chaminade's Owen Daugherty who was second in 29:31.8. HPU sophomore Joseph Moran of Union City, Calif./Logan was third in 29:44.7, with freshman Logan Thomas of Tustin, Calif./Tustin fourth in 29:50.2. Sophomore Ian Beals of Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage ran sixth in 31:46.2 and freshman Jack Livingood of Murphys, Calif./St. Francis seventh in 32:12.3.
 
The Rainbow Wahine took the top five spots in the women's race, led by Samantha North who was clocked in the 5-kilometer run in 19:47.1.
 
HPU senior Karen Corona-Perez of Ocracoke, N.C./Ocracoke was the first Division II runner across, placing sixth in 21:01.2, 10 seconds ahead of UH Hilo's Olivia Jarvis in 21:11.9.
 
Freshman Jacquelyn McEvoy of North Berwick, Maine/Noble was HPU's second runner across in 12th at 22:45.7, with junior McKay Guckenberg of Eureka, Mont./Lincoln County 13th in 22:48.8. Senior Evelyn Macias of Keller, Texas/Timber Creek ran 16th in 23:38.8 and freshman Jadelyn Rodriguez of Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat placed 17th in 24:32.3. Freshman Leila Cheo-Isaacs of Bound Brook, N.J./Ridge rounded out the Sharks in 22nd with a time of 25:39.4.
 
The Sharks are not scheduled next weekend as they prepare for the 2021 PacWest Conference Championships, co-hosted by Chaminade and HPU, on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Sharks home course at the Kahuku Golf Course. Pre-race activities start at 7:30 a.m.
