Sharks Fall to Point Loma 66-60

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University saw a late 6-0 run by Point Loma that led to PLNU's 66-60 PacWest Conference win on Thursday night at The Shark Tank.

The Sharks (3-4, 0-2) used an 11-0 run to start the second half for a nine-point lead over the Sea Lions (4-4, 1-0), only to have PLNU respond with a 12-0 run to retake the lead.

Senior Rodney Hounshell of Richmond, Va./West Linn (Ore.) led the Sharks and all scorers with a career-high 30 points with six rebounds as HPU's only double-digit scorer. Sophomore Jakob Kimura of Honolulu/Punahou and senior Domantas Sakickas of Kedainiai, Lithuania each added six points.

The Sea Lions were paced by Myles Franklin and Brian Goracke with 15 points each, as Goracke added nine rebounds as well. Luke Haupt and Hugh Baxter each contributed 10 points.

The Sharks hit 40 percent from the floor (21-of-53), including 13-of-31 (42 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU made 5-of-11 (46 percent) of its free throws. The Sea Lions connected on 41 percent of their shots from the field (23-of-57), including 12-of-34 (35 percent) from the arc. PLNU made 8-of-14 shots from the charity stripe (57 percent). PLNU outrebounded HPU 41-31, and had 14 turnovers to the Sharks 15.

The Sharks and Sea Lions played to 10 ties and seven lead changes.

HPU battled back to within two points on a Hounshell 3-pointer with 6:09 to play, but the Sea Lions hit back-to-back triples to take an 8-point lead and PLNU held off another Shark attempt to pull out the 66-60 win.

The Sharks have a few days off to prepare for final exams before taking on the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors in a game that is an exhibition for HPU next Wednesday. The contest is set for 7 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center.
