HPU Men Battle Chaminade to the Buzzer

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University took cross-town rival Chaminade to the wire, but it was the visitors from Waialae Avenue that went on a 12-6 run in the last 4:42 to post an 89-83 PacWest Conference victory Tuesday night at The Shark Tank.
 
The Sharks (0-5, 0-5) overcame a five-point second half deficit to tie the Silverswords (2-1, 2-1) at 77 with 4:42 to play, only to have CUH score on the next two possessions and never trail again.
 
HPU pulled back within one at with three minutes to play, but missed a 3-pointer in the last two minutes before the Swords buried a 3-pointer to regain a four-point advantage and the momentum.
 
The Sharks were paced by the play of senior David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark, who led all scorers with 25 points and added five assists. Sophomore Lachlan Viney of Melbourne, Australia/Mazenod, tallied 19 points with a game-highs of six assists and four steals. Junior Jacob Foy of Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier posted 11 points with eight rebounds, while sophomore Colton Martin of Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound scored 11 points.
 
Chaminade placed five players in double-figures, led by Isaac Amaral-Artharee with 17 points. Jessiya Villa scored 16 with five assists, while Kevin Kremer tossed in 14 points. Malik Parsons added 12 points, and Sawyer Storms just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
 
HPU hit 48 percent (33-of-69) from the floor, making 11-of-24 (46 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks connected on 6-of-10 (60 percent) from the free throw line. Chaminade shot 43 percent from the field (31-of-72), but hit 14-of-39 (36 percent) from the arc. The Swords hit 13-of-20 (65 percent) from the charity stripe. CUH outrebounded HPU 48-40, and the Sharks suffered 17 turnovers to the Swords 16.
 
Chaminade jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, before senior Tavon Tarpley of McLean, Va./Langley canned a 3-pointer and senior Chidoze Ndu of Lagos, Nigeria/Sunrise Christian Academy (Kan.) followed a missed shot to cut the lead to three. The Sharks and Swords exchanged scores before HPU closed the half on a 15-6 run that put the Sharks up by five at 40-35 on triple by junior Rodney Hounshell of Richmond, Va./West Linn (Ore.). CUH followed with a 3-ball from Parsons to send the Sharks into the half with a 40-38 lead.
 
The second half found both Chaminade and HPU swinging the ball around with the two teams each having five-point leads during the final 20 minutes before the Sharks answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 77-all with 4:42 on a layup-free throw 3-point play by Viney.
 
After a pair of scores by the Swords, HPU got a 3-pointer from Rowlands to pull within one at 81-80, but a trey from Parsons put CUH up four and HPU couldn't get closer than two the rest of the way. The Swords made 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 70 seconds to ice the win 89-83.
 
The two teams are in a stretch of facing each other four times in eight days. The second meeting between the teams will take place at Chaminade's home of McCabe Gym on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
