HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University got the game's first goal, but Chaminade added two second half goals to take a 2-1 PacWest Conference Hawai'i victory to open the Covid paused and shortened 2021 Spring season on Saturday at St. Louis Field.
The Sharks (0-1, 0-1), the home team in the contest after the game was moved to St. Louis Field because of field conditions at Atherton Field, had a difficult time against the wind in the second half. Chaminade (1-0) took advantage of the windy conditions to post the season opening victory.
HPU opened
Adria Borras era as head coach with the contest by scoring the first goal of the contest. HPU lit the scoreboard when junior
Brittny Ihara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City blasted a 25-yard free kick into the upper left corner in the 11th minute for the 1-0 lead.
The Sharks kept that lead with the wind into halftime. But the second half HPU played into the wind and had to defend the Silversword with the wind.
Chaminade tied the contest in the 59th minute when Jenna McLean found the ball out of a scrum, and chipped it over the top to tie the match at 1-1.
Then just nine minutes later, the Swords took the lead on a corner kick in the 68th minute. Randi Fontes curved the ball from the left corner high enough for the wind to help push it into the high right corner for the 2-1 lead.
HPU redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Makinna Fisher of Fort Meyers, Fla./Canterbury recorded four saves with the two goals allowed on the 12 shots offered by Chaminade.
Swords keeper Naomi Takata chalked up three saves with the goal allowed on HPU's eight shots.
HPU is scheduled to be in action again on next Sunday, Feb. 28, when the Sharks host Hawai'i Hilo in PacWest Conference Hawai'i Pod play.
