HONOLULU – Senior
Paul Enzigmueller scored off his own deflected penalty kick in the 81st minute to give Hawai'i Pacific University a 1-0 PacWest Conference Hawai'i victory against Hawai'I Hilo on Sunday afternoon at St. Louis Field.
The Sharks (2-0, 2-0) and Vulcans (1-1) battled in on-again, off-again rain showers and strong winds that hindered scoring chances for both teams.
Enzigmueller, a senior midfielder from Zimdorf, Germany, had the chance for the penalty kick when junior forward
Makana Srivongsana of Honolulu/Kaiser was fouled in the penalty area on a breakaway. Enzigmueller blasted his PK that was knocked down by a diving UH Hilo goalkeeper Christian Souza. But the deflection came back to Enzigmueller who sent a rocket shot back over the outstretched Souza for the game's only score.
HPU freshman goalkeeper
Connor Margo of Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth made that lead stand with a save on the next UH Hilo shot. Margo faced only eight Vulcan shots, saving both attempts that were on goal.
UHH's Souza nearly had a perfect sheet himself, posting four saves with the goal allowed on a dozen HPU shots.
The Sharks took as many shots in the second half with the wind as the Vulcans attempted in the game.
HPU plays again next Sunday at St. Louis Field when the Sharks visit the homestanding Chaminade Silverswords in the second game of the season series. Kickoff is set for Noon.
