HPU Men Beat Chaminade 2-1

HONOLULU – Sophomore Diego Saavedra scored in the 85th minute to lead Hawai'i Pacific University a 2-1 PacWest Conference Hawai'i victory over cross-town rival Chaminade on Sunday afternoon at St. Louis Field.

The Sharks (3-0, 3-0) broke a 1-1 tie with the Silverswords (0-3, 0-3) with Hiroyama's goal to keep a their record perfect.

HPU freshman goalkeeper Connor Margo of Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth did not record a save, but the HPU defense in front of him allowed only one shot on goal in the entire game.

The one shot on goal for the Swords came in the first half when Tasman Turner scored on a header off of Colin Roemer's corner kick in the 15th minute. But that would be the only shot on goal and one of just two shots for the entire game.

The Swords carried the 1-0 lead into the half, but the HPU pushed forward with the wind in the second half. The Sharks recorded 16 shots in the game, 15 in the second half. HPU didn't have a shot on goal in the first half against CUH starter Brandon Yasue. Stig Sander relieved Yasue in goal at halftime against HPU's shooting. Sander recorded five saves, but allowed two goals against the 15 HPU shots in the final 45 minutes.

The Sharks tied the game in the 67th minute when freshman Leandro Weingartner of Ober-Moerien, Germany took a feed from junior Austin Stafford of Federal Way, Wash./Beamer and buried it in the net for the equalizer.

The game played even for nearly 20 more minutes before HPU got a corner kick in the 85th minute. The corner deflected off a Chaminade player before settling to Saavedra of Kailua, Hawai'i/Vista Murieta (Ariz.) who banged it in off a fellow Shark.

HPU has one game remaining in the season. Next Sunday, the Sharks will play the Hawai'i Hilo in a rescheduled game that is set for St. Louis Field in Honolulu. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
