Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Takatsuka Wins 200th as No. 3/7 Sharks Roll to 29th Straight Win

HONOLULU –  Hawai'i Pacific University women's basketball coach Reid Takatsuka chalked up his 200th career victory as No. 3/7 HPU rolled to its 29th consecutive win with an 80-48 PacWest Conference triumph on Saturday afternoon at The Shark Tank.

The winningest active collegiate coach in Hawai'i, either men's or women's, ran his career mark to 200-64 in his 10th season. He's the second winningest women's college coach in state history behind only University of Hawai'i legend Vince Goo that posted a 334-166 mark in 17 years from 1987-to-2004.

The Sharks (4-0, 3-0) are ranked third in the D2SIDA Women's Poll and seventh in the WBCA Division II Poll, and are the top ranked team in the West Region. The Vulcans (2-3, 2-3) had their two-game win streak snapped.

HPU was paced by the play of junior Ally Bates of Melbourne, Australia/Yarra Valley with a game-high 21 points to go with nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior Olivia West of Launceston, Australia/Templestowe, scored 16 points with three 3-point field goals, while senior Alysha Marcucci of Yarragon, Australia/Marist-Sion, double-doubled with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior All-American Amy Baum of Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary just missed a triple-double, collecting 12 assists with eight points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Avery Cargill of Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman chipped in 11 points and senior Makenna Gambee of Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro added 10 points.

UH Hilo got 11 points from Mandi Kawaha and 10 points with five rebounds from Sara Shimizu.

HPU shot 47 percent (27-of-57) from the field, including 37 percent from the 3-point arc (10-of-27). HPU hit 84 percent from the free throw line, going 16-of-19. UH Hilo was held to just 30 percent from the field (16-of-53), and 33 percent (4-of-12) from the arc. The Vulcans went 12-of-15 from the foul line, 80 percent. HPU outrebounded UHH 41-28, and suffered only eight turnovers to the Vulcans 12.

The Sharks led wire-to-wire in the contest, as West buried a 3-pointer on the game's opening possession and HPU turned it into a 7-2 run. The third ranked Sharks used a 5-0 run to end the quarter on a Marcucci triple for a 13-point 19-6 lead at the end of the first. UH Hilo never got closer the rest of the game.

The Sharks extended the run to 10-0 with a 5-0 open to the second quarter. After a layup-free throw score by the Vulcans to break that run, HPU responded with another 10-0 run capped by a Bates layup for a 34-9 lead. It marked a 20-3 run in nearly eight minutes from 2:03 in the first quarter to 4:13 remaining in the second. UH Hilo cut the difference to 19 at the half as HPU held a 38-19 lead at intermission.

The Vulcans chopped the Sharks lead to 14 during the third quarter, but HPU responded in the final period, pushing the lead to 36 on a Marcucci 3-pointer before settling for the 32-point 80-48 win.

HPU and UHH face each other for a fourth time this season on Sunday at The Shark Tank. Tipoff time is slated for Noon.
