HONOLULU – Senior night for Hawai'i Pacific University came at the end of a long weekend of hosting the PacWest Hawai'i Tournament #1 and it showed as HPU fell in straight sets to cross-town rival Chaminade on Sunday night at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks (1-3, 1-3) ran out of steam after a long five-set match heading into the contest and the Silverswords (2-2, 2-2) took advantage with the 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 victory.
HPU posted a .150 hitting percentage with 2.0 team blocks, while CUH hit .381 with 8.0 team blocks.
The Sharks were led by seniors
Cameryn Collie and
Abigail Wilmington on Senior Night. Collie, from El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge posted nine kills with nine digs. Wilmington, from Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River, chalked up seven kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
The Swords were paced by Brooklen Pe'a with 12 kills and five blocks, while Rachel Reedy recorded nine kills. Lataisia Saulala led the match with six blocks.
The Sharks grabbed a lead in the first half of the opening set, but a 15-13 lead evaporated when the Swords went on a 5-0 run. The Sharks couldn't hold fast as Chaminade claimed the first set 25-19.
The Sharks got behind the eight-ball in the second and closed an seven-point deficit to three at 20-17 on a Collie kill, but the Swords recovered to win the second set 25-19.
The third set was dominated by Chaminade, who hit 66 percent for the set, as the Swords won going away for the sweep 25-17.
Following the match, the Sharks celebrated the final match at home for their four seniors: Collie, Wilmington,
Casey Davenport of Auburn, Wash./Mountainview and two-sport athlete
Makenna Gambee of Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro.
The Sharks join the rest of the Hawai'i pod for the second PacWest Hawai'i tournament April 2-3 in Hilo.
