HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University had a rough start to the second PacWest Hawai'i Tournament, falling to host Hawai'i Hilo 3-0 on Friday morning at Vulcan Gymnasium.
The Sharks fell to 1-4, 1-4 on the season, while the Vulcans raised their record to 4-1, 4-1 with the 25-13, 25-14, 25-17 victory.
HPU recorded a .000 attack percentage with 5.0 team blocks, while UH Hilo hit .250 with 8.0 team blocks.
The Sharks were led by a trio with four kills each: senior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, junior
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah and freshman
Sunny Brown of Draper, Utah/Alta. Collie recorded 11 digs as well.
The Vulcans were paced by Alexandria Parisian with 10 kills to go with four blocks, while Bria Beale just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Ashton Jessee recorded a game-high eight blocks.
The Sharks had a brief lead in the opening set before allowing UHH a 7-0 run to grab an advantage they wouldn't relinquish on the way to the 25-13 win.
HPU never led in the second set, but closed a 21-8 deficit to 24-14 before falling 25-14.
The third frame was even until 7-7, when the Vulcans ripped off a 13-3 run to take a 20-10 lead. At 22-11, HPU fought back with a 5-0 run, but it was too little, too late and the Vulcans took two of the next three points to win the set and match 25-17 on a kill by Beale.
HPU is back in action at 7 p.m. tonight when the Sharks face Chaminade to close the first day of the second spring tournament.
