HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University dominated the first set, but fell in a five set toss-up to Hawai'i Hilo on Sunday afternoon in the second day of the PacWest Hawai'i Tournament #1 at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks (1-2, 1-2) fell to the Vulcans (3-1, 3-1) 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 9-15.
The Sharks as a group hit for .243 despite the 10 blocks from the Vulcan defense, topping Hilo's .194 average against 10 HPU blocks.
The Sharks were headed by junior
Emily Joseph of Modesto, Calif./Gregori, with 18 kills and seven digs. Senior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge followed right behind with 17 kills and 14 digs with a block. Freshman
Sunny Brown of Draper, Utah/Alta added nine kills and six blocks including three solos. Senior
Abigail Wilmington of Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River hit .526 with two blocks and 11 kills.
The Vulcans were lead by Bria Beale who tallied 17 kills and had seven aces. Alexandria Parisian knocked down 13 with seven blocks.
After falling behind 5-0 in the opening set, the Sharks went on a 15-6 run from four UH Hilo errors followed by back-to-back kills from Joseph. They never lost more than a six-point lead for the rest of the set and junior
Cara McClean of Beaverton, Ore./Southridge polished it off with an ace at 25-17.
HPU and Hilo were back and forth the entire second set with neither team getting more than a four point advantage. With the Sharks up 22-20, two Vulcan kills tied it, and Brown knocked one down followed by two HPU errors that swung the lead to UHH 24-23. A final kill from Beale tied the sets at one a piece.
In set three, both teams held each other to two points at most until the Sharks pulled away at 23-18 with a bomb from Brown. HPU finally put it away at 25-23 with a kill from Joseph.
The Vulcans never allowed HPU an advantage in the fourth and pulled away to 23-18 until Wilmington and Joseph gave a last ditch run bring it to 23-21. The final blow came from Parisian shutting it down at 25-21.
The final set was all Vulcans as they rallied to a 14-8 advantage and none other than Beale would finalize the match at 15-9.
The Sharks finish the PacWest Hawai'i Tournament #1 Sunday night against Chaminade. First serve is at 7:00 p.m.
