HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University suffered a pair of straight set losses to open the third PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament at McCabe Gymnasium on Saturday. HPU fell to host Chaminade 3-0, then to Hawai'i Hilo 3-0 on day one.
The Sharks (2-8, 2-8) fell 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 to the Silverswords (4-5, 4-5) in the first match of the tournament, before losing to the Vulcans (8-1, 8-1) 25-16, 25-16, 25-18 later in the day.
Against Chaminade, the Sharks hit just .092 and posted 5.0 team blocks as the Swords recorded a .318 hitting percentage with 5.0 team blocks.
Senior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge had six kills and four digs for HPU. Freshman
Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow added five kills with a .250 hitting percentage, while om junior
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah posted four kills with two blocks.
CUH's Rachel Reedy collected 12 kills with a .556 hitting percentage and three blocks, while Brooklen Pe'a also had 12 kills with a .409 hitting percentage and two blocks. Kyra McCain added seven kills with three blocks.
In the match against UH Hilo, HPU was held to just .017 hitting with 4.0 team blocks, with the Vulcans hit .219 and 11.0 team blocks.
The Sharks were paced by junior
Emily Joseph of Modesto, Calif./Gregori with eight kills and five digs. Winters added five kills with a block.
UH Hilo got a double-double from Bria Beale with 11 kills and 11 digs with two blocks. Ashton Jessee picked up eight kills to go with six blocks. Kamilla Marias added five blocks as well.
The teams meet again on Sunday in day two of the tournament. HPU faces UH Hilo at 10 a.m., then plays Chaminade at 7 p.m. at McCabe Gym.
