HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University closed the third PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament with losses to Hawai'i Hilo and Chaminade on Sunday at McCabe Gymnasium.
The Sharks (2-10, 2-10) were downed in straight sets by the Vulcans(10-1, 10-1) 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 in the morning, then closed the tourney with a four-set loss to the host Silverswords (5-7, 5-7) 20-25, 18-25, 27-25, 14-25.
HPU was led on the day by senior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge who collected 26 kills in the two matches.
HPU posted a .126 hitting percentage with 5.0 team blocks in the match against UH Hilo, while the Vulcans hit .203 with 10.0 team blocks.
Collie tallied 11 kills with eight digs with two blocks against UHH, while freshman
Sunny Brown of Draper, Utah/Alta, added six kills and nine digs.
UH Hilo was led by Bria Beal with 12 kills, while Kamilla Marinas tallied 11 kills with a .368 hitting percentage and five blocks. Taira Ka'awaloa put up 10 kills.
In the four-set match against Chaminade, Collie racked up 15 kills with eight digs. Freshman
Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow collected nine kills with two blocks, with Brown adding seven kills.
Chaminade was led by Rachel Reedy with 16 kills, while Lataisia Saulala posted 13 kills, a .600 hitting percentage, and five blocks. Brooklen Pe'a double-doubled with 10 kills and 11 digs with four blocks. Kyra McCain also tallied five blocks with eight kills.
There is one more PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament for this season. The teams gather in Hilo for the tournament at UH Hilo's Vulcan Gym next weekend and are scheduled to be joined by Alaska Anchorage. HPU's first match is Saturday against Chaminade at 2:30 p.m.
