Sharks Battle in Loss To Swords

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped a 3-1 decision to Chaminade on Friday evening to close the first day of the PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament #2 at Vulcan Gymnasium.
 
The Sharks (1-5, 1-5) fell to the Silverswords (3-3, 3-3) 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25.
 
HPU hit just .038 in the four-set match, tallying 6.0 team blocks. CUH hit .256 with 12.0 team blocks.
 
Senior Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, led HPU with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs with a block. Freshman Sunny Brown of Draper, Utah/Alta put up six kills with two blocks. Senior Makenna Gambee of Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro led the Sharks with three blocks.
 
Chaminade was led by Annah Rivera with 15 kills, Brooklen Pe'a added a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs, with Rachel Reedy posted 10 kills with eight blocks. Kyra McCain also tallied eight blocks.
 
The Sharks opened the first set with an early lead, but a pair of 5-0 runs for the Swords gave Chaminade the momentum. HPU cut the CUH lead to four at 22-18, but the Swords held on for a 25-20 win.
 
HPU broke open a tight second set with a 6-2 run to grab a 16-12 lead and never lost the advantage. Chaminade pulled within 23-21 before the Sharks scored twice and won the set on a Collie kill to make it 25-21.
 
Set three saw swings for both teams, with HPU going up 12-9 on a service ace by Makayla Warthan. But the Swords followed with a 12-1 run to take a 21-13 lead. The Sharks followed with a 6-3 run of their own, however Chaminade came back with a kill from Pe'a to win the set 25-19.
 
HPU never led in the final set, falling behind 10-3 before making a run to get within two three times, the last at 16-14. CUH rallied back to swing the lead back and took the set 25-18.
 
HPU has two more matches in the tournament on Saturday, facing host UH Hilo at 9 a.m. and Chaminade at 5 p.m.
