HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University came back from a two-set deficit to beat Chaminade 3-2 in the second day of the PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament #2. HPU made the amazing comeback after dropping the day's opener to homestanding Hawai'i Hilo 3-0 on Saturday at Vulcan Gymnasium.
The Sharks (2-6, 2-6) picked up their second victory of the season in four matches against the Silverswords (3-4, 3-4) with the 16-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-15 win.
In the opening match of the day, the Vulcans (6-1, 6-1) handed the Sharks a 25-14, 25-21, 25-22 loss.
HPU, who hit .206 with 9.0 team blocks for the match against Chaminade, hit .351 in the final set in claiming the victory. The Silverswords hit .263 for the match with 9.0 blocks, but only hit .038 in the deciding set.
Senior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge led the way for the Sharks, collecting 23 kills while hitting .314. Collie double-doubled with 11 digs as well. Freshman
Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow chalked up 10 kills with seven blocks, while freshman
Ella Dotson of Tucson, Ariz./Marana added 10 kills as well.
Chaminade was paced by Brooklen Pe'a with 19 kills and 17 digs with five blocks, while Annah Rivera posted 12 kills, Kyra McCain 11 kills, and Lataisia Saulala 10 kills with five blocks.
The Sharks lost the first two sets 25-16 and 25-22, and were on the precipice of being swept down 22-21 in the third. But HPU got kills from junior
Emily Joseph of Modesto, Calif./Gregori and Winters to go up 23-22. The Swords tied it before Collie and Winters went back-to-back with kills to take the set 25-23.
The fourth set found HPU down 19-16 before a kill from junior
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah started a 6-0 run that put the Sharks up 22-19. But a 3-1 Sword run saw HPU with a 23-22 lead. Once again the duo of Winters and Collie combined for kills to put the set away 25-22 to knot the match at 2-all.
The deciding set was tight, with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage at any time. The teams knotted at 12-all before a Dotson kill and a block from Collie and junior
Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union put HPU at match point 14-12. Chaminade didn't back down answering with a pair of points. The Sharks had a second match point at 15-14 before CUH's Rachel Reedy tied the affair at 15-all.
That's when Collie stepped up with the last two of her kills to give the Sharks the 17-15 set win and the match victory 3-2.
In the earlier match against UH Hilo, the Sharks managed a .157 hitting percentage with 4.0 team blocks, while the Vulcans hit .294 with 7.0 team blocks in the three-setter.
Winters led the Sharks with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, Ferris had seven kills and Collie six kills and 14 digs.
The Vulcans got 15 kills and eight digs from Bria Beale to lead the way.
The Sharks are off until April 17, when they play in the PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament #3 at McCabe Gymnasium in Honolulu hosted by Chaminade. HPU meets Chaminade in the opening game at 10 a.m. on that Saturday.
