HPU Men Beat Cal State East Bay 1-0

HAYWARD, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore Sebastian Navarro collected the only goal of the match in the 77th minute to lead HPU to a 1-0 victory over Cal State East Bay Sunday at Pioneer Field.

The Sharks (1-2) picked up their first victory of the season and handed the Pioneers (1-2-1) their second defeat in 2021.

Navarro, a midfielder from Menifee, Calif./Perris, got a pass from super senior Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany and put in in the net for the game winner and HPU's first goal of the young season.

The Sharks defense was outstanding as well. While the Pioneers attempted 14 shots, eight were blocked and only three were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead, stopped all three for saves in notching his first shutout of the season for a 1-2 record.

HPU fired 15 shots in the contest, with eight on goal and two blocked. Starting keeper Jack Landreth posted three saves in the first half, while Zavier Hajdukovich had four saves in the second half and allowed the Sharks goal. Hajdukovich falls to 0-1 on the season.

The Pioneers pushed hard after the HPU goal, attempting six shots after the Sharks tally.

The Sharks return to Oahu for their home opener on Saturday, when they host Hawai'i Hilo in a non-conference contest at noon in the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
