Sharks Blank UH Hilo 1-0

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University senior Makana Srivongsana tallied the single goal in the 53rd minute of the Shark's 1-0 victory over Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Sharks (2-2) won their second straight to even their record while dishing the Vulcans (1-1) their first loss on the year in the designated non-conference contest.

Senior Gerrit Arzberger of Munich, Germany cranked a shot that was deflected high off the shins of a Hilo defenseman. Srivongsana, of Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kaiser, was on the far-right corner of the box and settled the ball only to battle through two other Vulcans to recover it for a clean shot to the lower left side of the netting.

The Sharks and Vulcans were very similar in shots, 12-to-11, with senior goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead grabbing four saves in his second consecutive shutout victory.

UH Hilo keeper Michael Harre faced seven shots in the first half with two saves but took the loss moving to 1-1 on the year.

The Vulcans battled hard with three great attempts in the last 10 minutes to tie the game but the HPU defense held solid and kept them at bay.

Next up, the Sharks host Western Washington on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
