WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo erupted for three second half goals in seven minutes to blow open the game and smash Hawai'i Pacific University 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in women's non-conference action at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (1-2) were outshot 20-4 by the Vulcans (2-2) as UHH kept a constant offensive pressure on HPU.
UH Hilo scored its first goal in the 16th minute off a direct free kick when Daeleen Tokunaga sent a rocket toward the upper right corner of the goal. HPU sophomore goalkeeper
Madi DePhillips knocked the ball back toward the field of play, but the ball was ruled to have crossed the goal line by the linesman and scored.
Despite seeing nine other shots in the first half, the Sharks didn't allow another score and trailed 1-0 at halftime.
The back-breaker for HPU came in the 59th minute.
That's when UH Hilo's Silje Vigeland stole the ball from a Shark defender on the Vulcans side near midfield. She dribbled into the open and found a Filippa Graneld wide open on the left side. Graneld launched a one-timer off the hand of DePhillips to take a 2-0 lead.
Four minutes later the Vulcans used some outstanding passing to collect a score in the 63rd minute. Nanea Wall passed through midfield to Graneld on the left side, who the crossed it to Tokunaga on the right. Tokunaga fired it into the net for her second goal of the contest and third of the season.
The final score came three minutes later in the 66th minute when Wall headed in her first goal of the year on a double-assist from Tokunaga and Graneld for a 4-0 lead.
The Vulcan defense was locked down as well, allowing just four shots to the Sharks, only one of those in the second half. HPU had two shots on goal. Starting keeper Viviana Poli (2-2) had one save in getting the win and playing into the 77th minute. Taylor Horburg played the remaining 13 minutes and recorded a save as well.
DePhillips of Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep (1-2) recorded a career-best 10 saves against the 20 total shots by UH Hilo, despite the four goals.
