DENVER – Hawai'i Pacific University suffered a 3-1 loss to Regis (Colo.) on Sunday at the Regis Match Pitch.
The Sharks (1-4) grabbed an early goal, but allowed three first half goals to give the Rangers (3-2) a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Sharks were first on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when senior
Brittny Ihara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City scored her first goal of the season after passes from freshman
Marcella Chan of Foster City, Calif./Aragon and freshman
Soraya Santos of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City for the early 1-0 advantage.
The Rangers tied the match just 16 minutes later as Kelby Kuo found an open Allison Warta evening the score at 1-1 in the 27th minute.
Then Regis took the lead just four minutes later. Following a free kick, Warta picked up the assist when she found Madison Hand to go up 2-1 in the 31st minute.
Just before the half, the Rangers collected an insurance goal in the 41st minute as Kuo scored her third goal of the season, putting the ball in the net unassisted for the 3-1 lead.
Neither team scored in the second half.
The Sharks started sophomore
Madi DePhillips of Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep started the match in goal, but was replaced by senior
Marissa Froio of Simi Valley, Calif./Royal after a collision in the 10th minute. Unfortunately for the Sharks, Froio recorded just one save against nine shots in the rest of the half while allowing three goals. DePhillips returned for the second half, collecting three saves against seven shots in the half and 10 for the match.
Regis goalkeeper Katelyn Martin allowed one goal and chalked up three saves against the Sharks five shots in the contest.
HPU returns to Oahu for its final non-conference contest when the Sharks visit St. Louis Field to face cross-town rival Chaminade on Saturday in a 1 p.m. match.
