OAKLAND, Calif. – Holy Names University made history on Monday night at Tobin Gym. For the first time since joining the PacWest Conference, HNU defeated Hawai'i Pacific University and did it in straight sets 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.
The Sharks (2-9, 1-2) started a Northern California road trip with the loss, while the Hawks (4-9, 1-4) beat HPU for the first time since joining the PacWest in 2012. HNU was 0-12 entering the contest.
The Sharks hit just .144 in the match with 2.0 team blocks. The Hawks hit .283 with 4.0 team blocks in the win.
HPU had two players lead the match in kills, with senior
Lauren Christie of Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon posting 12 kills with a .205 hitting percentage, and sophomore
Ella Dotson of Tucson, Ariz./Marana added 10 kills with a .240 hitting percentage. Junior
Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow was part of both of HPU's blocks.
Holy Names was led by Lauren Sera with nine kills and Ayanna Barham with eight kills. Saupuni Mavaega notched six kills, hit .545 and recorded three blocks.
The Sharks continue their road trip by visiting Fresno Pacific on Wednesday in a 3 p.m. HST (6 p.m. PDT) contest at the FPU Special Events Center.
