Sharks Fall In Season Opener at Chaminade 2-0

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i Pacific University men's soccer team dropped its season opener on Saturday as Chaminade took a 2-0 non-conference win at Saint Louis Field.

The Silverswords (1-0) scored a goal in the last two minutes of the first half and the last minute of the game to beat the Sharks (0-1).

HPU battled valiantly despite playing 58 of the contest's 90 minutes with just 10 players, after the Sharks lost a position when senior forward Makana Srivongsana of Honolulu/Kaiser received a red card for his second caution of the match.

The Swords fired 12 shots with six on goal as HPU senior goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead recorded four saves with the two goals allowed.

HPU took seven shots, six down a man, as Chaminade goalkeeper Brandon Yasue recorded two saves on the only attempts on goal.

The Swords scored their first goal in the 44th minute as Colin Roemer touched the ball to Reilly Minigutti who blasted a right angle shot just inside the box to for a 1-0 lead just before halftime.

The teams played even in the second half before the Swords capitalized in the final 40 seconds when Brison Kim rebounded his own missed shot and dropped it in the net for the insurance goal to make it 2-0.

Senior forward Austin Stafford of Federal Way, Wash./Beamer had both of the Sharks shots on goal in the contest.

HPU returns to action next Friday afternoon in Hayward, Calif., when the Sharks face Humboldt State in non-conference play.
