WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Westminster (Utah) scored once in each half and held Hawai'i Pacific University scoreless to win 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in women's non-conference action at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (1-1) were outshot 13-8 by the Griffins (2-0) as the Utah squad remained unbeaten. HPU suffered its first official loss of the season.
Westminster scored the first goal in the 25th minute when Cassidy Orr took a double pass from Rebecca Wheeler and Alexa Maple to slide a shot into the net for the early lead.
HPU and WC played even until early in the second half.
In the 55th minute, Wheeler collected her second assist of the match as she fed Aimee Kurfurst who ricocheted the ball off the crossbar into the net for the 2-0 lead.
HPU responded with higher offensive intensity, but could not find a score.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Madi DePhillips of Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep started for the Sharks, facing 12 of the 13 shots and recording six saves to go with the two goals allowed in 67 minutes. Senior goalkeeper
Marissa Froio of Semi Valley, Calif./Royal played the final 23 minutes, facing one shot that was high.
Westminster used two keepers as well, one in each half. Kelsea Cracroft notched the win playing in the first half with one save on three HPU shots. Naomi Kehl played the second and collected three saves on five Sharks shots as the two combined for the shutout.
The Sharks will be in action again next Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the host Hawai'i Hilo in non-conference play at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
