Sharks Take First Place in Hilo

HILO - The Hawaii Pacific University cross-country teams emerged victorious at the UH Hilo Invitational.

The Sharks women's team was the first to race their 5k, earning first place with 32 team points. Graduate Karen Corona-Perez led the charge, finishing first overall and setting a season-best 20:03.1. This is the second time Corona-Perez has taken first place this season.

Senior Maggie Meeds was the second HPU competitor to cross the finish line at 20:27.1, grabbing third place. Followed closely by junior Zamira Broadhurst-Hall at 20:35.4, she was the last finisher for the Sharks inside the top 5. The other two scoring finishers were sophomore Jadelyn Rodriguez coming in with a time of 22:04.2, and junior Alyssa D'Arpa at 22:55.1. The final runner for the Sharks who did not record points was freshman Maya Pompel who recorded a 23:40.8.

On the men's side, HPU earned 24 points in their first-place victory. Senior Troy Oshimo earned his first overall finish of the year in the 8k with a time of 27:31.3. Freshman Tyler Stoker came in ten seconds behind at 27:41.0 and earned second place. Junior Joseph Moran rounded out the top 5 at 28:28.6. Freshman Angel Aviles took sixth at 29:01.1, and sophomore Logan Thomas earned the last points for the Sharks in 10th at 29:51.1. Junior Cash Schwemer did not earn points towards the team total, but finished at 32:17.7.

The Sharks head back to the island of Oahu, where they gear up for home hosted HPU Sharks Invitational at Kahuku Golf Course next Saturday at 7:00 a.m.
