Fisher Earns 100th Win as Sharks Beat Hawks, 1-0

WAIPAHU - Hawaii Pacific University head coach Chris Fisher earned his 100th career victory 1-0 over Holy Names University Saturday night at the Waipio Soccer Complex.

"I'm blessed to have the players and coaches that have been a part of my life and this program. This milestone is more about them than me," said coach Fisher when asked about what the feat meant to him. "I've learned so much from the incredible people who share this journey with me."

The Sharks (4-4-2, 2-2-0) capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity to take down the Hawks (5-4-3, 3-2-0), who were on a two game win streak.

Much like the women's game that played before, both teams could not find a good attacking possession until the 16th minute where the Sharks put the games first shot on the board. A couple of minutes later, a hard foul just inside the box gave HPU their third penalty kick attempt in their last two games. Just like the previous two, graduate student Gerrit Arzberger slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

In the 43rd minute, the Sharks were once again on the prowl as Arzberger had back-to-back shots, one saved by the Hawk's goalie, the other blocked by a defensive player. Time would dwindle down as HPU entered halftime still leading 1-0.

The Hawks came to play in the second half as they produced six shots to the Sharks' one. However their final three shots would miss wide of the net. Heading into the final minute of the second half, chaos erupted. A yellow card by HPU gave HNU a free kick opportunity from about 30 ft out. The ball would be sent into the middle of the box and a scrabble ensued. Eventually, after many attempts at the ball, a Sharks defender was able to find a small gap, he punted the ball and the clock ticked to zero seconds.

Arzberger scored his 6th goal of the season, while graduate student goalie Jeremy Zielinski added three saves to his season total.

The Sharks will finish up their homestand next week on Friday, October 21, against Fresno Pacific University for senior night with kickoff at 7 p.m. HST.
