Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Arzberger Scores Two on Senior Night, Sharks Win 3-0 over Sunbirds

WAIPAHU - Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer hosted Fresno Pacific University Friday night for their final home game and senior night at the Waipi'o Soccer Complex.

The Sharks (5-4-2, 3-2-0) scored three times while shutting out the Sunbirds (2-10-2, 0-6-1).

The Sharks looked to set an early aggressive tone as they fired the game's first shot in the second minute. From there, the two teams would exchange shots throughout the entire half. Some controversy struck in the middle of the half as what looked to be a free kick goal for HPU, was called back.

Luckily for the Sharks, a second opportunity presented itself, in the form of a yellow card, leading to a free kick just outside of the box. Graduate Gerrit Arzberger would not let this second chance slip as he shot the ball into the bottom left side of the net, giving HPU a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. The Sunbirds attempted to respond but were not able to capitalize as the Sharks held a 1-0 lead into the half.

In the second half, the Sunbirds picked up their attacking pace, leading to many shots. But it was the Sharks who kept on scoring as graduate Dominic Toone earned a penalty kick for HPU. Arzberger stepped up once again, like he has done all season, and put away his second goal of the night. With time running down, the Sharks found their third goal of the night in the 80th minute. Arzberger passed the ball to fellow graduate, Reece Montogomery, who took it, and scored it, putting HPU up 3-0. Graduate goalie Jeremy Zielinski earned another clean sheet as the Sharks shutout the Sunbirds.

Arzberger scored his 7th and 8th goal of the season and added an assist, while Montogomery scored his 1st of the season. Zielinski added seven saves to his season total.

HPU honored their seven seniors before the game: Jeremy Zielinski, Dominic Toone, Makana Srivongsana, Austin Stafford, Reece Montgomery, Mads Hovelsroed, and captain Gerrit Arzberger were all recognized for their leadership and tenacity, on-and-off the field.

The Sharks will finish up their season on the road, starting next week on Monday, October 24, against Concordia University Irvine with kickoff set around 3:30 p.m. HST.
