Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sharks Score Early, Hold for 1-0 Victory over the Hawks

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team bested Holy Names University 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the Waipi'o Soccer Complex..

The Sharks improved to a (3-4-3, 2-1-1 Pacwest) record while the Hawks now stand at a (6-7-0, 0-5-0 Pacwest) record.

It was a stalemate throughout the half as both teams competed for possession in the mid-field, with neither side being able to find a big attacking opportunity. It was in the 25th minute when freshman Justice Valdez found a lane down the side of the field, dribbled the ball into the box and crossed it inwards for senior Katie Pothier who slid in, and shot the ball into the bottom right side of the net. The Sharks held on to a 1-0 lead as the first half came to a close.

The second half was much different as HPU played to retain their goal lead. Meanwhile the Hawks offense started to bring more pressure, however junior goalie Madi DePhillips only needed to save two shots from the HNU offense, including a last minute shot that sealed the game, and the victory, for the Sharks.

Valdez earned her first assist of the year, while Pothier now joins nine of her teammates, tied for second on the team with one goal each. DePhillips added three saves to her season total.

The Sharks will be back at the Waipi'o Soccer Complex next week on Friday, October 21, for their final home game and senior night. They will host Fresno Pacific, with kickoff slated for 4.30 p.m.
