Sharks Battle with Golden Eagles, Fall 3-1

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team hosted Concordia University Irvine Saturday afternoon for a Pacwest conference matchup in the Shark Tank. HPU bounced back in set three, but fell to CUI 3-1.

The Sharks (2-17, 2-11 Pacwest) have two final home games starting next week Thursday, while the Golden Eagles (13-8, 10-4 Pacwest) bounced back from their loss last night.

The first set was sloppy, yet competitive, as both teams seemed to still be getting into the game. The Golden Eagles held a 22-17 lead before the Sharks found a 4-1 spurt, closing the gap to two points. However, CUI regained and closed the first set 25-22.

Set two saw HPU grab a quick lead before Concordia scored six in a row. The Sharks eventually battled back to a 19-17 deficit, but CUI once again ran away with the set, winning 25-20, and taking a 2-0 set lead.

Set three saw neither team being able to grab a big lead before the Golden Eagles found themselves up by three, 14-11. The Sharks then went on a 7-1 run out of a timeout, grabbing the lead at 18-15. Soon HPU went on to set point, but CUI continued to battle, until senior middle Demi Winters slammed down the set point, putting the Sharks back into the game, down 2-1.

Much like the first three sets, it was competitive. HPU was up 12-11 before freshman outside hitter Lindsey Tapp blocked back-to-back shots, putting the Sharks up by three points. Unfortunately, a timeout for CUI proved vital as they would go on to outscore HPU 14-3 to close out the set and game, 3-1.

Winters, freshman Marley Sandoval, and junior Lachelle Sikes all had seven kills. Sophomore setter Pua Beazley led the assist category with 20, while freshman setter Morgan Bodde had 16. Graduate outside Riley Gill led HPU with 13 digs.

Hawaii Pacific University will have their final two home games next week. The first one will be on Thursday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shark Tank against Biola University
