Arzberger Scores 10th Goal of the Season, Sharks Win 1-0 over the Sea Lions

SAN DIEGO - The Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer team visited Point Loma Nazarene University for a PacWest conference matchup, Saturday afternoon. HPU scored late in the first half and held on for the 1-0 victory.

The Sharks (7-5-2, 5-3-0 PacWest) are playing well as they are sitting fourth in the PacWest heading into their last two games of the season, while the Sea Lions (7-6-3, 4-3-1 PacWest) suffered their first loss in three games.

Much of the first half seemed to favor Point Loma as they were constantly applying pressure with five shots, while HPU were only able to muster up a single shot. However in the 33rd minute, a pass from graduate Dominic Toone found graduate teammate Gerrit Arzberger, who slotted it away, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. The Sea Lions continued to fire away as they had three more shots in the final five minutes of the half, all of which missed the net, leaving HPU still up 1-0 at the break.

HPU wanted to extend their lead heading into the second half as they out-shot PLNU, 5-1 in the first 26 minutes, including three shots that came within a span of 35 seconds from each other. But, the Sea Lions responded, never letting the Sharks find another shot, while they took six of their own. Fortunately for HPU, none of the shots were on target, as they closed the game out, winning 1-0.

Arzberger reached the double-digit mark with his goals on the season, scoring his 10th, while Toone earned his 5th assist. Graduate goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski shook off his last performance, by claiming his 6th clean sheet on the year.

The Sharks will look to start a win streak as they continue their road trip as they face off against the Biola University Eagles on Monday, October 31. The match will be played at Al Barbour Field, with kickoff slated for around 4:00 p.m. HST.
