Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ortiz Scores Late as Sharks Win Over Eagles, 1-0

LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team completed their road trip in California as they took on Biola University Monday afternoon for a PacWest conference matchup. A beautiful passing play in the second half helped HPU take a 1-0 win over Biola.

The Sharks (4-8-3, 3-5-1 PacWest) snap their four game losing streak, while the Eagles (4-11-1, 3-6-0 PacWest) will face off against Holy Names University to conclude their regular season.

The Sharks brought the pressure early to start the game as graduate Brittny Ihara fired off a shot on target in the second minute The biggest chance for HPU in the first half came in the 39th minute, Ihara received a great pass from a teammate to get her past a couple of defenders, unfortunately her shot just missed the net by a couple of inches. The game remained scoreless as the first half came to a close.

The second half saw much of the similar aggression that the Sharks had in the first half. HPU was still looking for the attacking chance that would net them the lead. That chance came in the 75th minute when graduate Katie Searle crossed a ball inwards to junior Mehana Ortiz. Ortiz secured the ball, before cutting to her left, and shooting the ball into the bottom right side of the net, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

Not out of the woods yet, the Eagles started to ramp up their offensive pressure. In the final six minutes, Biola fired back-to-back shots, both being saved by graduate goalie Sophia Garrido. The Sharks were then able to hold onto the ball for the rest of the game, not allowing a potential game tying shot to come their way, as they secured the victory, 1-0.

The Sharks were firing on all cylinders as they had 15 shots on the day, 11 of which came off the feet of Ihara and Ortiz. Speaking of Ortiz, she scored her third goal of the season, tying her with junior teammate Caylie Uyema for most goals on the season. Garrido earned a clean sheet while adding four saves to her season total and Searle earned her second assist of the season in the victory.

The Sharks will have some time to rest as they travel back to Hawaii for their final match of the regular season. They will be heading to St. Louis Field to take on the Chaminade University Silverswords on November 5, with kickoff set for 12:00 p.m. HT.
