Sharks Volleyball Attack Vulcans in 3-0 Victory

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team chomped away UH Hilo in straight sets for their first season victory Saturday afternoon at the Shark Tank.

The Sharks (1-14, 1-8) played their most complete match of the season, getting revenge on the Vulcans (1-14, 1-8), who were handed their eighth loss in a row.

HPU and UH Hilo was locked into a first-set battle with a 16-15 lead halfway through the first set. Outside duo Ella Dotson and Riley Gill combined for back-to-back kills, giving them the momentum to close out set one.

The Sharks continued to apply pressure in the second set gaining a 4-3 lead and never relinquishing it for a 25-19 second set victory.

With the tension building towards sealing that first win, the Sharks seemed set to take the final set with ease as they led 21-16 down the stretch. However, the Vulcans battled back, out-scoring the Sharks 7-1 to regain the lead 23-22. Dotson and Ali Rumpel sealed the outside pin and tied things up with a block. The veteran Gill stepped back to the service line, dropped down two aces, and gave HPU their first win.

Dotson led the way this afternoon, racking up nine kills in the contests, with fellow outside Gill close behind with eight. The duo combined for 17 of the teams' 48 points. Freshman outside Violet Sickles had her highest offensive output of the season with six kills.

The floor general tandem of graduate Maile Powell and sophomore Pua Beazley combined for 27 assists. Senior libero Fa'amausili-Cacoulidis, Makenzie controlled the court, picking up nine digs.
