Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sharks Fall to Hilo 3-2

WAIPAHU - On Sunday afternoon, the Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer team dropped another battle of match 3-2 to UH Hilo at Waipio Soccer Complex.

The Sharks (3-4-2, 1-2-0) capitalized on their ability to be physical, but an untimely error put the Vulcans (3-4-3, 1-2-2).

HPU managed two shots in the first 15 minutes of the game before the Vulcans flipped the field on them. After an attempt that went out right, Hilo found themselves back in the box shortly after and found the back of the net for the match's first goal.

The Sharks bounced back when things got physical in the box, and a penalty shot was awarded to HPU. Graduate Gerrit Arzberger was called on to take the shot, buried it without doubt, and evened the score 1-1 heading into the half.

In the aggressiveness of the match, HPU found themselves drawing another penalty shot to begin the second half, where Arzberger drilled home his second of the game for a 2-1 lead.

However, the street flowed in both directions as the Vulcans drew a penalty shot 60th minute. The initial shot was saved but returned directly to the Hilo player, who put it back in quickly and tied the game at 2-2.

Four minutes later, Hilo attempted a long ball clear to the other end of the field, where HPU's goalkeeper came up to send it away and didn't connect solidly. A Vulcan player managed to beat the Sharks to the ball and chipped in the match's third goal for a 3-2 lead that would hold through.

Arzberger notched his second multi-goal match of the season in the defeat. Junior goalkeeper Austin Matthews started for the first time this season, saving four shots on the day.

The Sharks continue their homestand next week on Saturday, October 15, against Holy Names with kickoff at 7 p.m. HT.
