Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Starts 1-0, Beating Nanooks 74-64.

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team hosted the University of Alaska Fairbanks in their first regular season matchup Friday night in the Shark Tank. Hot shooting from HPU in the second half helped them to earn the win over ALA, 74-64.

The Sharks (1-0) battle against Anchorage tomorrow, while the Nanooks (0-1) face off against Chaminade to complete the GNAC/PacWest Challenge.

ALA started the game off with a layup, the basket was immediately answered back by freshman Melo Sanchez. It was a tightly contested first half as neither team held more than a basket lead throughout the first nine minutes. Fairbanks broke the close game, grabbing a lead of eight points, 24-16, with 8:03 left in the half. The Sharks, looking for an answer, found one in junior Maj Dusanic, who hit back-to-back layups to bring their deficit to a single point, 25-24. ALA finished the first half with a 8-5 run, holding a 33-29 at halftime.

The Sharks, still trailing, had a hard time finding a go-ahead bucket. After being sidelined for a while due to an injury early in the second half, sophomore Mason Landdeck came back into the game, and knocked down a three to give HPU their first lead of the second half, 52-50, with less than ten minutes to go. Hawaii Pacific went on an 8-0 run to propel their lead further. They would not look back as they never allowed Fairbanks to come within six points the rest of the game. The Sharks bested the Nanooks 74-64, earning a victory in the first regular season game.

Hawaii Pacific shot an electrifying 50% from the field and three-point line in the second half. They also made their free throws when it mattered, hitting all four. Somebody must have called the swat team, as HPU blocked five shots in the game.

Landdeck led the team in scoring with 16 points. Behind him, sophomore Marquis Moore, senior Jalen Chandler, and Sanchez all tied for second in the team with 13. Moore also had a team leading nine rebounds and a team leading three steals. Dusanic also had himself a game, scoring ten points and hauling in six rebounds.

The Sharks are back in action tomorrow to finish the GNAC/PacWest Challenge, as they face off against the University of Alaska Anchorage. Tip-off is set for around 6:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
