Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chandler Buries Game Winning Three in Thrilling Victory over the Seawolves, 74-73

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team concluded the GNAC/PacWest Challenge by hosting the University of Alaska Anchorage Saturday night in the Shark Tank. A game winning three pointer in the final ten seconds gave HPU a thrilling win over UAA, 74-73.

The Sharks (2-0) have won their first two games of the year, while the Seawolves (2-2) will look to bounce back in a couple of days against Hilo.

Senior Jalen Chandler knocked down a three pointer to start the game off for the Sharks. It was as back-and-forth as a game could be, with neither team ever finding a lead bigger than five points. After a competitive first half, the score settled at 41-40, with HPU trailing.

Hawaii Pacific shot 50% from the field in the first half, and also out rebounded the Seawolves 23-14. The biggest stat outlier was the turnover difference. The Sharks committed eight more turnovers, which resulted in 11 points off turnovers for Anchorage.

The game kept its competitive nature into the second half. But as time dwindled, the Sharks were facing a seven point deficit with less than a minute on the clock. After a couple of free throws from sophomore Marquis Moore, Chandler hit another three to cut the lead into two points with 30 seconds to go. Hawaii Pacific found another opportunity, as Moore was fouled on a three point shot. However, the sophomore only knocked it one, leaving HPU still trailing by a point with 21 seconds to go.

The Sharks fouled UAA guard Da'Zhon Wyche right as he received the ball, and with the crowd roaring and stomping their feet, a player who was 100% at the line, missed one due to the chaos. Now HPU, only down by two, needed to find their hero player. And what better person than Chandler, who received a pass from sophomore Mason Landdeck, pulled up from 28ft out, and buried it, causing the Shark Tank to shake. Not finished yet, the Seawolves drove the ball down and got off a high percentage shot. Fortunately for the Sharks, it just missed off of the rim, giving HPU the 74-73 victory.

Moore led the Sharks in scoring with 18 points, while completing a double-double, hauling in 12 rebounds. Behind him in scoring was senior Trey Chapman and Chandler, with 13 and 11 of their own. Sophomore Kordel Ng had some dimes, finishing with four assists, while defensively, freshman Melo Sanchez swatted away two balls.

The Sharks have a full week off until their next matchup against the University of Hawaii for an exhibition game in Laie, Hawaii. The game is on Saturday, November 19, with tip-off set for around noon.
