Women's Basketball Battles with Yellowjackets, Fall just Short, 73-64

HONOLULU- The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team had their first regular season matchup against Montana State University Billings Friday afternoon at McCabe Gymnasium. One quarter made the difference as HPU fell to MSUB, 73-64.

The Sharks (0-1) play again tomorrow against Simon Fraser University, while the Yellowjackets (1-0) fight the Silverswords.

Hawaii Pacific was on fire from beyond the arc in the first quarter as they shot 4-for-8. Three of those threes came from senior Avery Cargill, as she scored 11 of HPU's 18 points in the quarter. When it was all said and done, the two teams were knotted up at 18 by the end of the first.

The second quarter was also highly contested throughout the first seven and a half minutes. It was in the final two minutes where MSUB outscored HPU 6-1 to take a 34-26 lead into halftime.

The Sharks began to chip at the lead, getting to within three halfway through the third quarter. However, the Yellowjackets held their ground, eventually growing a lead as big as 11 point, as HPU trailed MSUB by nine points entering the fourth quarter.

Hawaii Pacific opened up the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, only trailing by two. Unfortunately, a four minute period all but decided HPU's fate, as MSUB went on a 18-2 run to seal the game. The Sharks fought back, but it was not enough, falling to the Yellowjackets, 73-64.

Graduate Abby Spurgin had a big game, leading the Sharks in both points (19) and rebounds (7). Cargill was right behind her, scoring 15 of her own. Junior Haley Masaki and graduate Keona Loftis were picking pockets, both finishing with two steals each.

The Sharks will finish the Malika Sports Challenge with a contest against Simon Fraser University tomorrow, November 11. This game will also take place at McCabe Gymnasium, with tip-off set for around 3:00 p.m. HT
