Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sharks Fall in Close Battle With Red Leafs, 87-76

HONOLULU- The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball wrapped up the Malika Sports Challenge today, facing off against Simon Fraser University at McCabe Gymnasium. HPU fell to SFU in a close battle, 87-76.

The Sharks (0-2) host Alaska Anchorage for their first home regular season game tomorrow, while the Red Leafs (2-0) do not play again until the Northwest Nazarene Thanksgiving Classic in late November.

It was the graduate Abby Spurgin show as she scored 12 points in the first quarter. However it was the Red Leafs who took control halfway through the quarter and held onto a 23-16 lead by the end of it.

The Sharks went on a 5-0 run to kick off the second quarter, cutting their deficit to two points. Unfortunately, an 8-0 run late in the second propelled Simon Fraser to a nine point lead going into halftime, as HPU trailed SFU 39-31.

The third quarter was much like the second quarter, a big run by Hawaii Pacific was answered quickly by the Red Leafs. Fraser held a lead of at least five points throughout the entirety of the quarter.

HPU made it interesting, crawling back into the game with a 7-0 run in the middle of the quarter. The Sharks were within four points with a minute and a half left, but a couple of free throws and a three pointer closed the door on any chance left for them. Hawaii Pacific fell to Simon Fraser by a score of 87-76.

Spurgin had another big game, leading the Sharks in points with 26, while hauling in six rebounds. Junior Kalina Obrey and senior Avery Cargill followed behind her with 11 points and ten points respectively. Meanwhile, graduate Keona Loftis led HPU in both rebounds (6) and assists (4).

The Sharks play their first home regular season game tomorrow, November 13. They will be hosting the University of Alaska Anchorage in the Shark Tank, with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
