Top Team Silverswords Prove to be too Strong, Sharks Fall 3-0

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team went across town to take on Chaminade University at McCabe Gymnasium Wednesday night for a PacWest conference matchup. The top team in the PacWest proved to be too strong for HPU, as they fell 3-0.

The Sharks (2-20, 2-14 Pacwest) head to California for their final four games, while the Silverswoards (20-7, 15-1 Pacwest) will look to take the first seed for the PacWest conference playoffs.

Despite the fact that the Sharks were facing the best team in the PacWest, they kept the first set close. The two teams exchanged the first 15 points by a score of 8-7, in favor of the Silverswords. However, HPU soon found themselves in a five point deficit. Not down and out yet, they battled back to within two points at a score of 19-17. CUH then regained control to close out set one 25-18.

The second set heavily favored the Silverswords as they went on a 7-0 run after surrendering the first two points of the set. The closest HPU got to CUH would be five points, as Chaminade took a 2-0 set lead after winning set two, 25-11.

Set three quickly got out of the hands of HPU as they faced a 12-3 scoreline. A small spark was found when they outscored the Silverswords 4-1 in the next five points. The Sharks then found another 9-4 run later in the set, but the two runs were not enough as the third and final set went the way of Chaminade, 25-19.

Graduate outside hitter Riley Gill led the team in both kills and digs with ten and eight respectively. Graduate Maile Powell led the team in assists with nine while sophomore setter Pua Beazley had eight.

The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team will head to California to wrap up their 2022 season with four road games. First stop is Fresno, California where they will take on the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds on Monday, November 7, with first serve around 4:00 p.m. HT.
