Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sharks Come out Firing, Beating Lincoln 77-49 in Hoops in Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team returned to regular season play in the Hoops in Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon, taking on Lincoln University inside the Shark Tank. HPU used a fiery second half to beat Lincoln, 77-49.

The Sharks (3-0) continue their hot streak to start the regular season, while the Oaklanders (0-2) face off against Chaminade University tomorrow.

Freshman Melo Sanchez grabbed a defensive rebound before knocking down the game's first points with a three pointer. Although the Oaklanders got within a single basket on multiple occasions, the Sharks never allowed them to tie the game up, keeping themselves in the lead throughout the entire first half.

Hawaii Pacific led by a single point entering the final two minutes. Sophomore Marquis Moore sinked a three ball, and then converted an and-1 in the next HPU possession. Both teams then traded a layup, before sophomore Kordel Ng drained a buzzer beating three to give the Sharks a 39-29 lead going into halftime.

HPU rode the momentum from the end of the first half, firing on all cylinders for a 22-4 run in the first seven minutes, highlighted by Sanchez hitting three more shots from beyond the arc. The closest the Oaklanders got would be 23 points, as Hawaii Pacific closed out another regular season win, 77-49, over Lincoln.

As a team, the Sharks passed the ball well, finishing with 17 assists on 30 made field goals. They were also like thieves in the night, as they came away with 12 steals, scoring 16 points off of those turnovers.

Moore once again led the Sharks in scoring with 17 points. Sanchez trailed just behind him with 12 of his own. Seniors Jalen Chandler and Trey Chapman, along with junior Maj Dusanic, each had eight points. Chapman also led the Sharks in rebounding, bringing in nine. Ng had himself a game, leading the team with four assists and three steals, all while scoring seven points.

The Sharks go again tomorrow as they battle against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to start the second and final day of the Hoops in Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic. Jump ball is set for 2:00 p.m. HT in the Shark Tank.
