Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Regular Season to the Mountain Lions

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team opened the final day of the Hoops in Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic by taking on the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon. UCCS's rebounding ability proved to be the difference, as HPU fell 71-56.

The Sharks (3-1) open up PacWest conference play in a few days, while the Mountain Lions (6-1) bounced back from their loss yesterday.

The first half heavily swayed the way of Colorado Springs, jumping ahead 25-13 in the first 16 minutes. However, the Sharks slightly recovered, outscoring the Mountain Lions 7-2, bringing their deficit to only seven points, 27-20, entering halftime.

Immediately out of the gates, UCCS regained control of the game, going on a 11-0 run. The Sharks were trailing 43-26 when they found a small spark, as freshman Melo Sanchez sank back-to-back threes to close the gap to 11 points. HPU continued to trade blow for blow, finding themselves down by only eight points, 56-48, with less than six minutes to go. Unfortunately, the closest they would get would be seven points, as Hawaii Pacific fell to Colorado Springs 71-56.

Sanchez led the way for the Sharks with 21 points, while senior Jalen Chandler and sophomore Marquis Moore had 14 and 11 respectively. Senior Trey Chapman brought in a team leading 11 rebounds, while swatting away two shots.

The Sharks will look ahead as they gear up to begin PacWest conference play in a few days, hosting Chaminade University on Tuesday, November 29. The game is slated to start around 6:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank.
