Late Second Half Surge not Enough for Comeback as Sharks fall to Vulcans, 71-66

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team hosted the University of Hawai'i Hilo for a PacWest conference matchup inside the Shark Tank Thursday night. A late surge in the second half was not enough to complete the comeback, as HPU fell 71-66 to UHH.

The Sharks (3-3, 0-2 PacWest) have some time to regroup before their next game in nine days, while the Vulcans (3-1, 1-0 PacWest) start their conference play with a victory.

Senior Jalen Chandler started the scoring for both teams with a layup. Both teams then exchanged runs in a low scoring battle that saw the Vulcans leading the Sharks 29-22 by the end of the first half.

The second half is when things got interesting. Immediately off the bat Hawai'i Hilo established control, jumping ahead 52-31 in the first five and a half minutes. It seemed like Hawaii Pacific was out of steam. However, what started from another Chandler layup, would lead to a 15-0 run for the Sharks, highlighted by freshman Melo Sanchez knocking down back-to-back threes, to get them within six points, 52-46.

Hawaii Pacific got within four points with two minutes to go, but that would be the closest they would get, as the game came to a close with the Sharks falling 71-66 to the Vulcans.

Sophomore Marquis Moore led the Sharks in scoring with 21 points, hitting 50 percent of his shots.

Sanchez finished the game with 18, knocking down an astounding six threes.

Junior Maj Dusanic earned himself a double-double with ten points and 10 rebounds, he also swatted away two shots.

Finally, sophomore Mason Landdeck and Moore tied in dishing out a team-high four assists.

The Sharks have nine days off before they play the University of Hawai'i Hilo again, this time, they will be the visitors. The game is on Saturday, December 10, with tip off set for around 7:30 p.m. HT in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
