Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spurgin Sets School Record with 38, Sharks beat Vulcans Once More in Overtime, 80-75

HILO - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team took a quick road trip to face off against the University of Hawai'i Hilo Saturday afternoon in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Just like their matchup last week, it took overtime to decide the winner, with HPU prevailing once again, taking down UHH 80-75.

Graduate Abby Spurgin set a new school record, scoring 38 points. The previous record was held by Ashley Jenkins, who had 37 points back in 2008.

The Sharks (3-3, 3-0 PacWest) remain unbeaten in conference play, while the Vulcans (4-4, 1-2 PacWest) have a week off before facing the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons.

The Sharks opened the game up quickly, winning the jump ball before graduate Ashley Nunez found fellow graduate Keona Loftis, who knocked down the three pointer. However, the tide shifted in favor of the Vulcans, outscoring HPU 15-4. Hawaii Pacific battled back to tie the game, but two three pointers propelled Hawai'i Hilo to a 21-16 lead at the end of the first frame.

It was a back-and-forth start to the second quarter, with both teams not letting the other score consecutive baskets. With less than five minutes to go, junior Kalina Obrey connected on an and-1 attempt. This lit a spark in the Sharks, closing the first half on an 11-3 run, earning them a 35-33 lead going into halftime.

The momentum from the second quarter carried into the start of the second half, as the Sharks extended their lead to 44-35, capped off by a three pointer from senior Avery Cargill. But if this game has shown anything, it was the resilience from both sides. The Vulcans crawled back into the game, as the Sharks only led by four, 54-50, with one more quarter to go in regulation.

Much like the second quarter, both sides were scoring, with the Vulcans not allowing the Sharks to get a lead of more than seven points. HPU were only up by five with less than four minutes to go. Hawai'i Hilo knocked down crucial free-throws to tie the game up at 66 a piece. However, there were still two minutes on the clock. Neither team found the bottom of the basket again as the buzzer sounded. This fantastic matchup went into overtime, just like it did last week.

Spurgin opened overtime with a turnaround jump shot. Hawai'i Hilo answered, and continued to apply pressure. The Sharks trailed by a single point with three minutes to go. Spurgin decided enough was enough, taking the game into her own hands, scoring the next seven points for HPU to UHH's two. It may have taken overtime, but the Sharks once again came out victorious over the Vulcans, 80-75.

Spurgin topped off last week's stellar performance by setting a new school record, scoring 38 points. She did that while also completing a double-double with ten rebounds. If that was not enough, she also swatted away three shots, including a late three-point attempt in overtime.

Obrey also had herself a game, putting away 17 points, and hauling in nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, sophomore Allison Ross was a passing machine, assisting seven baskets.

The Sharks are back in six days for the Hoops in Hawai'i Holiday Classic, taking on Western Washington on Friday, December 16. Tip-off set for 3:00 p.m. inside the Shark Tank.
