Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sharks fall to No. 8 Western Washington, 77-70, to Open up Hoops in Hawaii Classic

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball kicked off the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic by hosting Western Washington University inside the Shark Tank Friday afternoon. WWU entered today's contest as the No. 8 team in the D2SIDA women's basketball media poll. HPU kept it close, but eventually fell to the No. 8 team, 77-70.

The Sharks (3-4, 3-0 PacWest) face off against the Bobcats tomorrow, while the Vikings (6-1, 1-0 GNAC) have won six in a row and will play again on Sunday.

The start of the first quarter was rough for the Sharks, as they could not find the back of the basket, besides a single free-throw, in the first five minutes of the game. Meanwhile, the Vikings jumped ahead early with a 10-1 lead. HPU found a breath of life when graduate Abby Spurgin knocked in a layup. Hawaii Pacific went on to close the first frame with a 15-9 run, and only trailed 19-16 at the first buzzer.

After a Spurgin layup to start the second, the Sharks were within a point. But they were never able to take the lead, as the Vikings continued to hold them at arm's length. A small 5-0 run in favor of Western Washington proved to be the difference maker, as HPU entered the locker room with a 39-32 deficit.

The battle between the two teams carried all throughout the second half. The Sharks were trailing seven points in the fourth quarter, when junior Kalina Obrey sank a three pointer to get them within four. However, Western Washington regained control, closing the game out with a 77-70 victory over Hawaii Pacific.

Spurgin continued to score, putting up a team leading 21 points, all whilst completing another double-double with a team leading 13 rebounds.

Obrey was second in command in both categories, scoring 18 and hauling in six boards.

Senior Avery Cargill also put up numbers, scoring 17 points, while sophomore Allison Ross led the team with three assists.

The Sharks will go again tomorrow, December 17, as they face off against the College of the Ozarks Bobcats. This game will be the first of two matchups taking place inside the Shark Tank, with tip-off set for 1:00 p.m. HT.
