Women's Basketball Bounces Back for 72-56 Victory over Bobcats

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team took part in their second game of the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic Saturday afternoon, with a match against the College of the Ozarks (Mo.) inside the Shark Tank. HPU used a stellar third quarter to take the victory, 72-56, over COFO.

The Sharks (4-4, 3-0 PacWest) bounced back from their loss yesterday, while the Bobcats (8-4) will try to redeem themselves tomorrow against the University of Providence.

The Ozarks started the scoring, connecting on a layup 45 seconds into the game. Sophomore Jordyn Jensen responded right away, knocking down a three-pointer off a pass from senior Avery Cargill. The two teams battled it out, all the way to a 20-20 tie with a couple of minutes to go. HPU, with a layup and three free-throws, grabbed a 25-22 lead at the end of the first.

Junior Kalina Obrey began the second quarter by hitting a step back jumper. She later connected on a three-point attempt to give Hawaii Pacific a 30-24 lead with six minutes left in the first half. There was not much scoring after that, as both teams scored four more points a piece, to a 34-28 scoreline, in favor of the Sharks, entering the second half.

HPU opened the second half with a quick 9-2 run in the first three and a half minutes. They continued to extend their lead, taking a 50-35 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Bobcats were not able to get back within single digit points, as the Sharks closed the door, winning 72-56.

Jensen finished with a team leading 23 points, hitting three shots from beyond the arc.

Obrey trailed right behind her with 17 of her own. She also hauled in seven rebounds, four of which were offensive boards.

With graduate Abby Spurgin out with an injury, the Sharks turned to junior Kaylee Berry to fill the center position. Berry slotted in perfectly, recording a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.

Finally, Cargill led the team in passing, dishing out three assists.

The Sharks have a day off until they play their final game in the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic. They will battle against the Hope International Royals on Monday, December 19, inside the Shark Tank, with the game starting at 1:45 p.m. HT.
